NDH was thrilled to host this special screening of the acclaimed psychological drama Hoard by British writer-director Luna Carmoon, followed by a Q&A session with Luna and producer Loran Dunn.
What a fantastic evening at the Century Club last week where we were thrilled to screen Hoard by British writer-director Luna Carmoon and welcome her and producers Loran Dunn & Helen Simmons as guests for a wonderful, frank, funny, smelly ol' Q&A afterwards (see the film) which was an inspiring insight into Luna's process and how these three great filmmakers work together. It was as emotionally affecting as it was at the LFF when we saw it back in October last year. Huge outpouring of love and affection for it afterwards and in all the messages I got the following day, and we were even treated to a hint of what might be next from the team.
Luna draws from her own life to craft this bracing psychological drama, which won Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival 2023 and swept three prizes at the Venice Film Festival, including Most Innovative Film and the Audience Award. The film follows the journey of seven-year-old Maria (Lily-Beau Leach) and her mother (Hayley Squires) who live in a loving yet unconventional world, collecting shiny rubbish. One fateful night, their world shatters, and a decade later, we find Maria (Saura Lightfoot Leon) living with her foster mother. As she navigates her new life, she encounters an animalistic stranger (Joseph Quinn), igniting a fierce and emotional story about burgeoning sexuality, grief, and a traumatic past.
“A deeply strange and compelling study of hysteria” The Guardian, who also praised the film for its audacious storytelling, and that Carmoon’s debut announces her as a talent to watch.
